Its not the amount of avatars that are lacking. Quite a few pages of them. Most of those avatars aren't appealing (< reread 2x), so you see the same decent ones up and down the friends list. That's the real problem IMO and then you can't make your own. But I understand why there wouldn't be customizable avatars.
